Darjeeling Schools Closed: All schools and colleges in Darjeeling, West Bengal, will remain closed for the rest of the week. According to an official notice issued by the city's education department, all educational institutions will remain closed from October 8 to October 10, 2025.

Landslides and Disruption Force Closure:

This decision has been taken to ensure that students and teachers remain safe in the risky situation the city has been facing for the past two days. "Due to heavy rainfall and subsequent landslides occurred on the 4th and 5th October, 2025 the connectivity and the mobility have been disrupted in the entire region of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration.

Official Reopening Set for October 13:

The official notification said, "Considering the ground aspects, the competent authority of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration has decided that all educational institutions (Government, Government sponsored, Government aided, private, run by missionaries, etc.) i.e. primary schools, secondary schools, SSK, MSK, colleges (both general and technical) will remain closed from October 8 to 10, 2025. These educational institutions will reopen on October 13, 2025 (Monday)."

Death Toll Climbs, Roads Fully Cut:

According to media reports, the death toll in the Darjeeling landslide rose to 28 on Monday, with six people still missing. Furthermore, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) Chief Executive Officer Anit Thapa informed the public that all areas of the GTA have been cut off from road connectivity and a report will be submitted to the government.

ANI quoted him as saying, "We never imagined so many lives would be lost. Every area of the GTA has been cut off from road connectivity. We are assessing the damage and preparing a report, which we will submit to the government. We are expecting help from the governments. We are planning to build a temporary Bailey bridge. The incident happened yesterday. The assessment will take time."

CM Confirms Bridges Collapsed:

"Two iron bridges have collapsed, several roads have been damaged and flooded, huge tracts of land... have been inundated," Mamata Banerjee, the state's chief minister, said in a post on 'X' (earlier known as Twitter).


The recent heavy rainfall and landslides have caused severe flooding across North Bengal, leading to the tragic loss of lives, livelihoods, and property. Dhupguri, Nagrakata, large parts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, as well as Matigara, Jorebunglow Sukhiapokhri, Mirik, and other areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, are among the worst affected.
