India education budget 2026-27: India's education sector stands at a pivotal crossroads, and the Union Budget 2026–27 has arrived with a sweeping set of proposals that promise to fundamentally reshape how the nation invests in learning. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, delivering her ninth consecutive budget, laid out an ambitious roadmap that stretches from rural secondary schools all the way to world-class research townships, drawing cheers from educators and policymakers alike.

The announcements span infrastructure, access, innovation, and health sciences; a rare breadth that signals the government's intent to treat education not as a single line item, but as a strategic pillar of national development. At the heart of the proposals is a bold push for equity and excellence in equal measure.

Union Budget 2026-27 Boosts Education Allocation by 8.27%

In the Union Budget 2026-27, the Ministry of Education has been allocated Rs 1,39,285.95 crore, which is approximately 8.27 per cent more than the Rs 1,28,650 crore allocated last year.

The allocation for the Department of School Education and Literacy has increased from Rs 78,572 crore in 2025-26 to Rs 83,561.41 crore this year, representing an increase of approximately 6.35 per cent.

Girls' Hostel in Every District: At least one girls' hostel will be established in every district across the country, specifically targeting higher-education STEM institutions.
 
5 University Townships: Five new university townships will be created near major industrial and logistics corridors, housing multiple universities, colleges, residential complexes, and research infrastructure.
 
Content Labs in 15,000 Schools: The Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai, will be supported. to set up content labs across over 15,000 secondary schools nationwide
 
3 New All India Institutes of Ayurveda: Three fresh AIIAs proposed to expand traditional medicine education and research across India.
 
New National Institute of Design:  A dedicated design institute will be set up in the eastern region to boost design education and creative industries.
 
4 Telescope Facilities: Four astrophysics and astronomy telescope infrastructure sites will be set up or upgraded to promote space sciences.
 
3 New Pharmaceutical Research Institutes: Three new national institutes of pharmaceutical education and research will be established, with seven existing ones set for upgrades.
 
Allied Health Training Push: Ten new allied health disciplines, including optometry, anesthesia, and behavioural health, will be introduced, aiming to train one lakh professionals over five years.

Orange Economy: Boosting India's AVGC Sector

-India's AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics) sector is projected to require 2 million professionals by 2030

-Budget proposes to support the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai, in setting up AVGC Content Creator Labs in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges
