CBSE: According to the New Education Policy (NEP), the Center announced significant reforms to the educational system on Wednesday. Textbooks will be created for the 2024 academic year. The Ministry of Education announced the revised curricular structure.
Students in classes 11 and 12 are required to learn two languages, at least one of which must be an Indian language.
Board exams would be held twice a year, with students able to keep their top score, the ministry added.
There will be less need for intensive coaching and memorizing because the focus of the board exams will be on measuring students' grasp of the subjects.
Furthermore, students will have more freedom to choose their own courses throughout the 11th and 12th grades because they won't be restricted to any certain streams.
"Board exams will be offered at least twice a year to ensure students have enough time and opportunity to perform well. Students can then appear for a board exam in subjects they have completed and feel ready for. They will also be allowed to retain the best score," the ministry said.
"In due course of time, school boards are to develop capacities to offer 'on demand' exams in due course of time. Besides board exam test developers and evaluators, they will have to go through university-certified courses before taking up this work," it said.
The board exams will evaluate comprehension and attainment of competencies rather than months of coaching and memorization in order to make them "easier" than the existing "high stakes" practice.
The new framework also emphasizes that the expense of textbooks should be minimized and that the current practice of "covering" volumes in the classroom will be eliminated.
