Pegasus Fellowship:  Kumar Abhishek, a Supreme Court lawyer from Madhuahan village of Tetaria block in East Champaran, has achieved a milestone that few young legal professionals experience early in their careers. Completing the highly competitive Pegasus Fellowship, awarded to only two Indian advocates each year, he spent two months observing London’s judicial structure, barrister culture and common law traditions.

His exposure included visits to the Supreme Courts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, Parliament, and several top barrister chambers, giving him a deeper understanding of global judicial practices.

For Abhishek, this fellowship strengthens a journey built on dedication and academic excellence. Appointed to the Pegasus Fellowship by the Kapila & Nirmal Hingorani Foundation, Abhishek added another distinction to an already exceptional year. Earlier in 2025, he had received the Justice J.S. Verma Fellowship of the Supreme Court—an honour given by judges and senior advocates to promising young practitioners. Together, these two fellowships place him among a small group of Indian lawyers recognised for both competence and courtroom discipline.

With education from BHU, Delhi University and the Indian Law Institute, and experience as an Assistant Professor at Delhi University and Legal Advisor to the Law Commission of India, he has developed a balanced foundation in teaching, research and practice.

A Journey Rooted in Hard Work and Global Exposure:

Abhishek’s rise from a quiet village to international legal institutions reflects extraordinary commitment. Observing some of the world’s oldest and most respected courts broadened his understanding of how judicial systems evolve and function. His experience motivates many young professionals to dream beyond limitations.

Strengthening Expertise Through Education and Courtroom Practice:

Since starting his Supreme Court practice in 2021, Abhishek has argued influential constitutional matters. These include the major Uttar Pradesh accountants’ appointment dispute affecting nearly 8,000 candidates, sensitive issues concerning Parshvanath Hill in Jharkhand, and cases involving international citizens. He has demonstrated a proficiency in complex issues. While representing an American citizen in the Delhi High Court, he also witnessed the intersection of law with international discourse.

Law As a Responsibility Toward Society:

Abhishek believes that practising law in the Supreme Court is not just a profession, but also a means of fulfilling public responsibility. According to him, decisions made in the Supreme Court affect people in remote parts of the country, so it is essential to consider the interests of every section of society. This perspective inspires him to view his work not just as a career, but as an opportunity to contribute.

He added that the Pegasus Fellowship not only allowed him to understand the international judicial framework, but also gave him insight into where the Indian legal system stands in a global context and where it can go. Now, back in Delhi, he is preparing to incorporate this experience into his work, with the clear goal of ensuring that his role in the court also reflects a sense of responsibility to society.
