Gandhi Jayanti 2025: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi played an important role in India's freedom movement. His birth anniversary falls on October 2 and is observed as Gandhi Jayanti every year. Mahatma Gandhi is known as the father of the nation as he has played a significant role in achieving India’s Independence for India. Here, we bring to you top 7 Mahatma Gandhi-led movements against British rule in India.

1. Champaran Movement (1917): The Champaran movement in Bihar was considered as the first active involvement of  Mahatma Gandhi  in the Indian freedom struggle. This movement was considered as a response to the exploitation of the poor farmers in India, who were forced to sell their crops.

2. Kheda Movement (1918): The Kheda Movement was also known as the Kheda Satyagraha.  This movement was initiated by Mohan Lal Pandey in 1917 and launched 7 days after the Ahmedabad mill strike, playing a vital role in the struggle of Indian Independence. Mahatma Gandhi organised this movement.

3. Salt Satyagraha: Salt Satyagraha is also known as Dandi March. This was a nonviolent civil disobedience movement led by Mahatma Gandhi against the salt tax imposed by the British government on Indian citizens. Mahatma Gandhi led a  group of people from the Sabarmati Ashram on March 12, 1930.

4. Quit India Movement: Quit India Movement was a mass protest that was launched against British rule in India that took place during World War II. This movement was launched on August 8, 1942, at the All India Congress Committee session in Bombay. The aim of the movement was to end British rule in India.

5. Non-cooperation Movement (1920): The Non-cooperation Movement was launched in the year 1920. Mahatma Gandhi launched this movement following the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.  The idea of Swaraj, which Mahatma Gandhi later defined in a discussion, played one of the major roles in this movement. 

6. Civil-Disobedience Movement (1930): Mahatma Gandhi addressed the country through a newspaper Young India and expressed his 11 demands which were accepted by the government. As a result, Mahatma Gandhi initiated this Civil Disobedience movement which is also known as the Dandi March.

7. Rowlatt Satyagraha: Rowlatt Satyagraha was one of the first movements that was launched by Mahatma Gandhi after his arrival in India. The movement was based on the recommendations of the Sedition Committee headed by Sir Sidney Rowlatt. The Rowlatt Satyagraha was a non-violent protest.
