India erupted in celebration as it was liberated from the British Empire's control, signalling the start of an independent and free state rule free from the terror rule of the British Empire's 200-year dominance.
Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first prime minister, also declared India's independence on August 15, 1947. After the UK Parliament enacted the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which gave the Indian Constituent Assembly legislative power, India became the largest democratic country in the world.
