Jamia Millia Islamia New Exam Norms: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has introduced a significant change to its examination policy, aimed at helping final-year students avoid unnecessary delays in completing their degrees. The university's Executive Council has amended Ordinance-15, a move that will allow eligible students to clear pending backlog papers much faster than before.
Previously, students who failed to clear certain papers had to wait until the next regular examination cycle came around, which often pushed back their graduation timelines by months or even a full academic year. With this new provision, that waiting period is effectively eliminated for those who qualify.
Who Benefits From the Change?
Under the revised rules, students in their final semester or final year of annual programmes will be allowed to appear for compartment examinations to clear backlog papers from any earlier semester or academic year, immediately after their final exams conclude. The Office of the Controller of Examinations is expected to release a separate schedule for these compartment exams.
Importantly, this benefit is limited to students enrolled in regular, on-campus programmes; those studying through distance education are not included in the revised policy.
Amendments to Ordinance-15
The change comes via an amendment to Clause 24.4 of Ordinance-15. While the rule generally does not allow compartment exams for programmes following a carry-over system, an exception has now been carved out specifically for final-year students.
Re-Evaluation Option Also Updated
Alongside this, the Council revised Clause 23.1, which deals with re-evaluation of answer scripts. Final-year students now have the choice to sit the compartment exam instead of applying for re-evaluation. Students from other years, however, will continue to follow the existing process, applying for re-evaluation within 15 days of result declaration.
What It Means for Students?
Taken together, these amendments are designed to remove a long-standing bottleneck in JMI's academic calendar. By letting final-year students clear backlogs without a long wait, the university hopes to help more students graduate on schedule, reducing the anxiety and lost time that came with the older system.
