Summer vacation Kashmir schools: In response to the relentless heatwave sweeping across the Kashmir Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir government has announced a 10-day summer vacation for all private and government schools from July 1 to July 10. The decision was confirmed by Education Minister Sakina Ittoo, citing health and safety concerns for school children as temperatures continue to rise unusually high in the region.

The scorching heat in Kashmir has broken a two-decade-long record. On Thursday, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 35.2°C, marking the highest temperature in June in the past 20 years. The intense heat, accompanied by dry and hot winds, has made daily routines uncomfortable, particularly for school-going children.

In a statement, Sakina Ittoo said, “The government will reassess the situation after July 10 and take a decision on whether to extend the holidays or resume school operations.” She also added that this measure was taken after consultations with health and disaster management officials.

In addition to the holidays, the government has revised school timings to minimize exposure to the peak heat hours. From Saturday, schools within Srinagar Municipal limits will operate from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, while those outside the municipal boundary will function from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. These timings will remain in effect until further notice or significant change in weather conditions.

While Jammu has received some relief in the form of scattered rains, the situation in the Valley remains alarming. The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning for Kashmir for the next 48 hours, urging people to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

20-Year Heat Record Broken:

This is the first time in two decades that Srinagar has experienced such high temperatures in the month of June. The previous records have been shattered, indicating the intensifying impact of climate change on the region's weather patterns.

Education Department’s Response:

The summer holiday decision and revised school timings reflect the government’s prompt response to safeguard students' health. The administration is closely monitoring the situation and will take further actions based on updated weather forecasts post-July 10.
