Top oldest animals that are still alive: There are several animal species that are considered as the oldest animals in the world and are still alive. These ancient animals are a testament to longevity, and are the oldest animals on earth still surviving. New discoveries, such as the ongoing study of Greenland sharks that have the ability to live for more than 400 years, are considered as the longest-living creature on Earth. Here, we bring to you the list of the top 9 oldest animals in the world that are still alive.
1.Galapagos Tortoise: Galapagos tortoises popularly referred to as Giant Tortoise, are known for their impressive lifespans. These ancient reptiles have been around for millions of years because of their slow metabolism. They have an estimated age of 177 years.
2. Greenland Shark: The scientific name of the Greenland Shark is Somniosus microcephalus. This animal is the longest-living animal in the world which is considered as one of the oldest animals too. They have an estimated age of 392+ years.
3. Bowhead Whale: The scientific name of the Bowhead Whale is Balaena mysticetus. Its most unique feature is its large, arched skull and mouth. These animals are one of the oldest living animals and have an estimated age of 200+ years.
4. Aldabra Giant Tortoise: The scientific name of the Aldabra Giant Tortoise is Aldabrachelys gigantea. Jonathan the Seychelles Giant Tortoise, an individual species, is the oldest living land animal. These animals have an estimated age of 192 years.
5. Ocean Quahog: Arctica islandica is the scientific name of the Ocean Quahog. A bivalve mollusk, a specimen named Ming which is considered as the oldest non-colonial animal in the world. These animals have an estimated age of 507 years.
6. Red Sea Urchin: Strongylocentrotus franciscanus is the scientific name of the Red Sea Urchin. This animal was found in the Pacific Ocean, they show no signs of aging even at advanced ages. They have an estimated age of 200+ years.
7. Tuatara: The tuatara is a unique, lizard-like reptile which is found in New Zealand and the sole surviving member of an ancient reptile order. The scientific anime of this animal is Sphenodon punctatus and has an estimated age of 111 years.
8. Glass Sponge: The scientific name of the Glass Sponge is Hexactinellida. Glass sponges are considered as the deep-sea sponges characterised by a skeleton of silica spicules. They have an impressive estimated age of 15,000 years.
9. Koi Fish: Cyprinus rubrofuscus is the scientific name of the Koi Fish. A koi fish is popular for its extremely colorful, ornamental variety of the common carp found in Japan. Hanako is a famous koi that has an estimated age of 226 years.
