The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) will introduce a new system for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams starting from the 2025 academic year. Under this system, there will be two exam sessions each year: the first in February or early March, and the second in May. The May session will offer students who did not pass one or more subjects an opportunity to retake the exams.
Meghalaya's Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma, shared that the state cabinet has recently approved a decision to amend the MBOSE Regulation for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination, 2011. This change is intended to offer students an extra chance to succeed in their exams, minimise the waiting period between attempts, and align with the National Education Policy (NEP) to better support and enhance student success.
“From the beginning of 2025, MBOSE will hold two SSLC board exams each year. The first exam will take place in February or early March, and the second will allow students who fail in all or a few subjects to retake the exam within one to two months which will be in May,” said Meghalaya's Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma, as reported by news agency PTI.

Moreover, starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, the state will end the "best of five papers" policy, requiring students to pass all six subjects in their board exams. Additionally, the state cabinet has approved several new regulations, including the Meghalaya Public School Service Rules, the Meghalaya Subordinate Water Resources Engineering Service Rules of 2024, and amendments to the Farmers Empowerment Commission Bill of 2024.
