Tamil Nadu NEET UG Counselling Policy:  The Tamil Nadu government's Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has confirmed it will maintain its current NEET UG 2026 counselling policy, even though the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), which conducts counselling for the 15 per cent All India Quota (AIQ) and other seats, has introduced major changes to the process.

Under the MCC's revised guidelines, candidates opting for the "Float" option can complete document verification online.

Candidates are categorised into two groups: 'Freeze' and 'Float'. Candidates in the 'Freeze' category accept their allotted seat and exit the counselling process, whereas those in the 'Float' category retain their allotted seat while remaining eligible for subsequent rounds of counselling.

The Tamil Nadu government stated that it already has a robust document verification process and a system for online seat resignation (surrendering a seat) in place.

Tamil Nadu's Current Policy for Document Verification

DMER, Tamil Nadu has informed students and parents that the state follows a robust system for NEET UG 2026 document verification, involving a thorough scrutiny of certificates uploaded during the application process. The state further stated that document verification takes place at the allotted institution, requiring candidates to visit the college in person.

How do seat resignation and upgradation processes work in Tamil Nadu?

 Regarding the seat resignation process, the Tamil Nadu government stated that it has already adopted a digital resignation workflow and strictly prohibits offline resignations. Students must submit their applications to resign from a seat via the state's online portal, tnmedicalselection.org.

Students in Tamil Nadu also have the option to upgrade their seats from Round 1 to Round 2 and from Round 2 to Round 3. A candidate who secures a medical seat in an earlier round may get the opportunity to choose a better college in a subsequent round.

NEET UG Counseling to Begin Tomorrow, August 5

NEET UG 2026 counseling for the 15 per cent All India Quota (AIQ) seats will commence tomorrow, August 5, 2026, either around 11:00 AM or before 4:00 PM. Candidates will be able to register using their NEET UG roll number, application number, and date of birth.

Registration will close at 3:00 PM on August 12, and the Round 1 results will be declared on August 17, 2026. Round 1 of state counseling will be conducted from August 13 to August 22, 2026.
