Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud advised the petitioner to 'please study' after the Supreme Court dismissed a petition requesting the reduction of cut-offs in the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) for law graduates.
CJI DY Chandrachud, heading the bench, emphasised that lowering the cut-off scores would adversely affect the standard of lawyers. Currently, the passing marks stand at 45 per cent for general category candidates and 40 per cent for SC/ST category candidates.
“They have put a cut-off of 45% for general, OBC category and 40% for SC/ST …what kind of lawyer will the person be if they cannot score this much?” the Chief Justice said, adding, “Padho bhai! (please study).”
The All India Bar Examination, conducted by the Bar Council of India, is a prerequisite for law graduates to begin practicing. This exam is conducted biannually in over 10 languages and has no age restrictions. The exam covers a broad spectrum of subjects, including Constitutional law, criminal law, Public Interest Litigation (PIL), environmental law, and industrial law. Taxation and intellectual property laws are also part of the syllabus, alongside various other legal disciplines.
