Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone for Phase-B infrastructure works of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu through virtual mode, officials said.
The development marks a major step in expanding the capacity of one of India’s third-generation IITs, established in 2016, the officials said.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who physically participated in the ceremony on the institute campus here, hailed the IIT Jammu as a rising hub of innovation and start-ups.
IIT Jammu: A Rising Hub of Innovation
Union Minister Jitendra Singh praised IIT Jammu as a fast-emerging centre of innovation and start-ups. From its inception, the institute was conceived as a priority project to meet the long-standing aspirations of the region for a premier technical institution.
With Phase-A construction already completed — including lecture theatres, academic blocks, hostels, dining, and utilities — IIT Jammu has laid a strong foundation for rapid growth in its formative years.

Phase-B Expansion and Research Park
Singh announced that the Phase-B expansion has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 1,398 crore. This will add new academic and residential infrastructure, advanced laboratories, and a dedicated research park. The park, modelled on IIT Madras, will be the first of its kind in north India. It aims to strengthen industry-academia linkages, foster start-ups, and support small and medium enterprises with technology-driven solutions.
The minister highlighted IIT Jammu’s steady progress, with the institute securing 56th rank in the 2025 NIRF Engineering rankings within a decade of its establishment. He also pointed out its unique location advantage — surrounded by AIIMS, IIM Jammu, and the Central University of Jammu — which boosts opportunities for interdisciplinary research.
Further, the Union Cabinet has approved capacity expansion in five new IITs Tirupati, Bhilai, Dharwad, Jammu, and Palakkad with an overall outlay of Rs 11,828 crore.
