Banaras Hindu University: The Ministry of Education announced a significant leadership change at Banaras Hindu University with the appointment of Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi as the new Vice Chancellor. This appointment ends the interim period under acting Vice Chancellor Professor Sanjay Kumar, who had been managing the university since January 2025 following Professor Sudhir K. Jain's tenure completion.
Professor Chaturvedi brings extensive administrative experience from his leadership roles across multiple premier institutions. His distinguished career includes serving as Director of IIT Roorkee from 2017 to 2022, Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla, and Director of IIT Mandi. These positions have equipped him with comprehensive understanding of higher education management and institutional development.
The appointment follows the established protocol for Central Universities under the Ministry of Education. The President of India, acting as Visitor, makes such appointments based on recommendations from selection committees. Professor Chaturvedi's three-year term will continue until he reaches 70 years of age, whichever comes first.
His academic credentials are rooted in electrical engineering, having completed his BTech, MTech, and PhD from IIT Kanpur. His research expertise focuses on communication systems and wireless communication technologies. Additionally, his policy involvement includes serving on a Department of Telecommunications committee that recommended spectrum allocation criteria for telecom operators in 2008.
