QS World University Rankings 2025: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), in its 15th edition, has released the World University Rankings by Subject for 2025, assessing universities in 55 distinct subjects across five major academic disciplines. These rankings utilize five primary criteria—Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Research Citations per Paper, H-index, and International Research Network, to provide a comprehensive overview of global academic excellence.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has secured the leading position for the 13th year in a row in the QS World University Rankings 2025.  Imperial College London has jumped four spots to claim the second position, while the University of Oxford and Harvard University occupy the third and fourth places, respectively. The University of Cambridge completes the top five.

The Indian School of Mines (ISM),  located in Dhanbad and recognised as an IIT, has achieved the highest position among Indian institutions in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2025, attaining the 20th spot worldwide with an overall score of 74.7 out of 100 in Engineering (Mineral and Mining), a significant rise from its previous rank of 41 last year.

India aced the top 12 of the 50 positions across the 55 subject rankings– which included subjects like arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences and management.

The rankings were published on Wednesday by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global higher education analysis organisation. This year, 79 Indian institutions were included in the rankings, an increase of 10 from the 69 that appeared in 2024.

The most recent rankings encompass over 1,500 universities from 105 different higher education systems. The United States leads in representation with 197 institutions ranked, followed by the United Kingdom with 90 and mainland China with 71.

Indian Institutions Shine in QS Rankings 2025:

Indian institutions have made a notable presence in the QS World University Rankings 2025, with several top universities featuring in the top 50 across various subjects. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Delhi, Bombay, Madras, and Kharagpur, along with IIMs in Ahmedabad and Bangalore, and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), have showcased their academic prowess. Notably, IIT Delhi has improved its ranking in Engineering and Technology, while other institutions have seen mixed results.
