School Holiday 2025: Several states have announced a holiday for all government and private educational institutions on November 24 to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru. Since this date falls on a Monday, both students and staff will enjoy an extended break, as the preceding Sunday is already designated as a weekly holiday.

This year, Martyrs' Day falls on a Monday, so students will effectively have two consecutive days off, as November 23 is a Sunday, followed by a public holiday on November 24. There will be no academic activities or classes during this period.

Why Are Schools Closed?

Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, revered as Hind Ki Chadar (Shield of India), is honored for sacrificing his life in 1675 to promote religious freedom and protect the rights of individuals beyond his own faith. He was executed at Chandni Chowk under the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, and his martyrdom is commemorated each year with prayers and memorial gatherings.

Throughout Gurudwaras, the day is celebrated with recitations from the Bachittar Natak, a composition that narrates his life and teachings, along with special religious events organized in his honor.
