JNU PhD Admission: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is considering a return to in-house entrance examinations for the intake of PhD scholars, as per the teachers' body of the central university. This follows the cancellation of the June 2024 session of the UGC-NET examination over 'integrity concerns'.

Starting this academic session, admission into PhD programmes at JNU was supposed to take place through the now-cancelled exam. In a statement on Thursday, the JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA) announced that the public university is considering conducting its own entrance examination for those seeking admission as PhD scholars.

JNU PhD Admission: Students, Teachers Opposed UGC-NET

According to JNUTA, university Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit took on July 3, 2024 a decision to open up the possibility of resurrecting the old system of JNU conducting its own entrance examination for PhD admissions. A senior JNU official cited by ANI confirmed that such a proposal is indeed under consideration.

Over the past year, several teachers and students at JNU have opposed the UGC-NET, which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). They have urged the JNU's management to reassume the responsibility of selecting candidates for admission into the university's PhD programmes.

In its statement, JNUTA said, "It welcomes the decisions taken in the meeting of the Vice Chancellor and Deans of Schools on 3 July 2024, as well as to refer the matter to the faculty of Schools/Centres for their opinions." It added, "JNUTA considers this to be a vindication of its long-standing position on the matter of entrance examinations, as well as a positive response to the specific demands raised by it after the cancellation of the June 2024 UGC-NET Examination."
