Yearender 2024: As 2024 draws to a close, the year has been remarkably rewarding for educational institutions across India. Universities and colleges nationwide have achieved significant milestones, further strengthening India’s position as a global education hub.

This year, IIT Madras retained its position as the top-ranked higher education institution in the country, followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru in second place and IIT Bombay in third. These were followed by IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur in the overall category rankings, as determined by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

The IITs have once again asserted their dominance in the engineering category of the NIRF Rankings 2024, securing the majority of the top 10 positions.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, was ranked as the best university in India, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, and Jamia Millia Islamia. In the college category, Hindu College of Delhi University emerged as the top-ranked institution, with Miranda House and St. Stephen's College taking the second and third spots, respectively.

This year, the NIRF introduced three new categories: Open Universities, Skill Universities, and State-Funded Universities. Looking ahead, the framework plans to launch a sustainability category in 2025.
