Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil is currently basking in the success of his recently released movie Aavesham. Despite the success of Malayalam movies, they still struggle to find OTT partners. In a conversation with Galatta Plus, Fahadh Faasil revealed the solid backing of OTT platforms that Malayalam industry lacks.
Fahadh Faasil highlighted that despite significant growth in the industry, certain problems persist. The actor’s revelation has shocked many fans, as Malayalam cinema is often regarded as the top film industry in India, particularly in recent years. The National Award-winning actor explained that Malayalam movies still have to demonstrate their success in theaters as a prerequisite for securing distribution deals with online streaming platforms (OTTs).
The actor-producer shared that more than 80 percent of films from other Indian film industries secure OTT deals quite effortlessly. Fahadh Faasil noted that for many of these films, streaming rights are often sold even before filming begins. This contrasts sharply with the situation in Malayalam cinema, as evidenced by the experiences shared by the producer of ‘Premalu’. Despite the industry's high-quality productions, many recent Malayalam blockbusters have faced significant challenges in securing OTT platforms for their digital release. Surprisingly, this includes ‘Manjummel Boys’, the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time, which also encountered difficulties in obtaining an OTT agreement, even though it was a box office hit.
