New Delhi | Jagran Entertainment Desk: Veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan on Tuesday was selected for Dada Saheb Phalke Award, India's highest award in cinema.

Minister of Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar announced about it and congratulated the actor and said that he has inspired 'two generations' of people.

"The legend Amitabh Bachchan who entertained and inspired for 2 generations has been selected unanimously for #DadaSahabPhalke award. The entire country and international community is happy. My heartiest Congratulations to him," Javadekar tweeted on Tuesday.

Son of late poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, the 76-year-old veteran actor has been a part of Indian cinema for over four decades and has received numerous accolades for his versatility in acting.

He was last seen onscreen in 'Badla', Bachchan is a recipient of four National Film Awards for his roles in 'Agneepath', 'Black', 'Paa' and 'Piku'. He made his acting debut with 'Saat Hindustani'. Earlier, he was honoured with Padma Vibhushan - the country's second highest civilian honour - in 2015.

The Dada Saheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The recipient is honoured for their "outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema" and is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry. So far 66 people have been conferred with this award.
