This year's Raksha Bandhan celebrations coincided with a period of nationwide outrage and protests demanding justice for Dr. Moumita, a victim of a heinous rape and murder that took place on August 9 at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Arjun marked Raksha Bandhan by sharing a poignant video, highlighting the urgency of addressing women's safety in light of the Kolkata case, and urged men to acknowledge their role in the conversation and take responsibility.
Arjun Kapoor shares important message on Raksha Bandhan
In a heartfelt video, Arjun Kapoor said, “So I’m about to go and celebrate Raksha Bandhan with my sisters guys. It feels really strange to celebrate a festival with what’s happening, which has to do with protecting each other, protecting your sisters, being there for the women in your life, for the women that you love, that you care for. While we see so much anguish and so much lack of basic understanding and education amongst a lot of the men, when we celebrate Rakhi, we speak about being a brother, taking care of.”
He went on to state, “Why aren’t we taught how to make the environment safe enough for all our sisters to roam around without needing a brother? All the time to protect and take care physically to be around. Yes, I know the visual is something we got used to that the brother is protective or the man is protective but I think somewhere we need to teach other men that they need to make women feel safe rather than teach men to protect women.”
“It’s a much bigger conversation. I think there’s a lot of education. There’s a lot of conversation and there’s a lot of basic understanding that is lacking in our ecosystem. I don’t know how much this will change how people think, but it’s definitely something that’s been on my mind. Why have you always told to protect? Why aren’t we told to make them feel safe? It’s something I’ve been thinking about. It’s been going on in my mind for a long time,” said Arjun.
Kolkata Rape and Murder Case
On August 9, a devastating incident unfolded at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a post-graduate trainee doctor was tragically found dead in a seminar hall, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation. In a powerful display of solidarity, doctors from across the nation continued to stage protests on Saturday, demanding swift justice for the victim, who was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered.
The protests, which began on Wednesday, were held in major cities such as Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, with demonstrators holding poignant placards that read "Justice needs to be served," "No duty without security," and "Justice delayed is Justice denied," emphasising the urgency and gravity of the situation. The collective voice of the medical fraternity echoed through the streets, seeking accountability and action from authorities to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice and that measures are taken to prevent such heinous crimes from occurring in the future.
