On one hand, we strive to live in a secular environment, on the other hand, there exists a sombre reality often overlooked- deaths, violence, and brutality. One such saga existed in our country, where a group called Naxalites-Maoisits pursued different ideologies than the national ethos. They sought to illuminate their own stamp and not the tricolor that symbolises unity. Bastar: The Naxal Story delves deep into this narrative. The movie sheds light on the secretive yet dangerous activities of a group responsible for the brutal killings of 76 CRPF jawans in a go. Despite such horrific tragedies, silence often shrouds these events, shadowing them from the eyes of public disclosure.
Bastar: The Naxal Story | PLOT
‘Bastar: The Naxal Story’ delves into the 1910 Bastar rebellion, known as the Bhumkal movement. This uprising, led by the Adivasis, occurred in 1910 as a protest against British domination within the princely state of Bastar, situated in central India.
Bastar: The Naxal Story | Review
Why Only Bastar?
Sudipto Sen Knows His Business Well
Since several “important” topics are dominating conversations in the country, why filmmaker Sudipto Sen solely focused on Bastar? Given the plethora of subjects Sen has the calibre to choose from, it's notable that he selects those not shown on the forefront. The same occurred with "The Kerala Story," which was as important as Bastar, yet often overlooked. There was a clear need for people to understand the reality of different parts of the country. A shout out to Sudipto Sen for bringing such intriguing topics to the public domain's notice.
BEWARE! Bastar Is Not For The Soft-Hearted…
Right from the start, ‘Bastar: The Naxal Story’ grabs attention with a gripping courtroom drama scene. Actor Yashpal Sharma shines in his role as a lawyer, skillfully defending I.P.S. Neerja Mathur, who is accused of the killings of Naxalites. However, the film then shifts focus to the brutal killings by the Maoists - actions so harrowing that they will make you shut your eyes. It's shocking to witness the extent of cruelty inflicted upon those who simply express their love for the Tricolor and refuse to accept the group's flag.
The level of brutality depicted in ‘Bastar: The Naxal Story’ is spine-chilling, leaving a lasting impact as it portrays how innocent men from families are punished for refusing to comply with the Naxalites. Prepare to be moved to tears by the injustices depicted in this powerful narrative.
Salwa Judum…
The struggle revolves around Salwa Judum, and Neerja Mathur is fighting hard to prevent the government from dismissing it. For the unversed, Salwa Judum, means "peace march" in the Gondi language, was a militia formed and employed as part of efforts to counter insurgency in Chhattisgarh, India. Its main aim was to address Naxalite activities in the area. However, to find out if Salwa Judum was indeed removed from the state, one must watch the film. This topic adds an intriguing twist to ‘Bastar: The Naxal Story’.
Reality Of The Failed System
A devastating incident unfolded in 2010 where 76 CRPF Jawans were shot dead in a row, while some were burnt alive. Sudipto Sen brilliantly depicts the government's failure during moments of horrific incidents, showcasing how they missed a chance to protect those in need. However, the Home Minister’s “WONDERFUL” excuse will shock you to the core. He tells I.P.S. Neerja Mathur- "RAAT HO RAHI THI, RAAT KO BACKUP NAHI MIL SAKTA" (It was night, backup couldn't be provided).
No Mercy
The opening scenes and the pinnacle of the story are unmissable. They portray the extraordinary lengths a woman goes to seek revenge for the immense suffering she endured, particularly the brutal murder of her husband by the Naxalites (axed into countless pieces). The vengeance sought by the wife, a central theme of the film, is guaranteed to give you chills.
Adah Sharma Shines Once Again
When it comes to selecting the perfect scripts, Adah Sharma has definitely mastered the craft. Following the success of ‘The Kerala Story’, if audiences resonate with it, ‘Bastar: The Naxal Story’ could potentially be her next big hit. Her performance doesn’t seem like acting; there are moments when she embodies the real I.P.S. officer. She flawlessly balances her accent, aggression, and the intensity needed for her role.
The supporting actors, including Raima Sen, Anangsha Biswas, Indira Tiwari, Shilpa Shukla, and others, deliver exceptional performances. In my opinion, this film stands out as one where the casting feels absolutely spot-on.
BGM Does Justice Like Never Before
Each time a brutal event unfolds, the background music heightens the intensity and makes it even more frightening. Towards the end, there is a scene where Indira Tiwari takes a step forward to confront the one who butchers her husband. The music perfectly complements the scene, leaving viewers captivated for a moment.
Bastar: The Naxal Story | FINAL VERDICT
'Bastar: The Naxal Story' is a must-watch movie based on real-life events. Through narratives like ‘Bastar’ we are beckoned to delve beyond the surface, to confront the realities that evade easy conversation, and to seek a deeper understanding of the forces that shape our world. Movies of this caliber should not be overlooked, but if you're not inclined towards violent content, then this particular film may not suit your preferences.
