The much-anticipated movie Emergency has been a highly talked about film since it was announced in 2022. The story has been set against the backdrop of the Indian Emergency which happened from 1975 to 1977. Kangana Ranaut will be playing the role of the first female Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. The film is all set to hit the screen in theatres on 6th September this year. Ahead of the release of Emergency, there were famous performances of actresses, who portrayed the role of Indira Gandhi on screen. 

1) Indu Sarkar

Supriya Vinod’s performance as the former PM in the movie was appreciated by critics and the audience. Indu Sarkar was based during the time of Emergency. The movie showcased the protagonist’s husband, a government employee, who took advantage of the situation in the country to move ahead in his career. On the other hand, the protagonist went on a different path. It also starred Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kirti Kulhari, Anupam Kher, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Ankur Vikal and Rashmi Jha in prominent roles. The film is currently streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar and Prime Video.

2) Bell Bottom

Lara Dutta’s portrayal of Indira Gandhi in the movie was the most talked about performance during the film’s release. However, the actress’ look has also created a buzz on social media. The movie was one of the hit movies of 2021. It featured Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, Zain Khan Durrani, Huma Qureshi, Anjali Anand and Moumita Moitra in prominent roles. The film is streaming on Prime Video.

3) Sam Bahadur

Fatima Sana Shaikh played the role of the former PM of India. The audience criticised the actress's appearance as they could not accept her for the role. But the story of the touched the chords of the audience. Sam Bahadur also starred Vicky Kaushal, Sanya Malhotra, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sammy Jonas Heaney, Edward Sonnenblick, Neeraj Kabi, Col Ravi Sharma and Keita Arai in key roles. It is streaming on Zee5.

4) Thackrey

The audience appreciated Avantika Akerkar's portrayal of Indira Gandhi in the film. The movie is based on the life of Balasaheb Thackeray and his rise in the political field. It featured Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amrita Rao, Vishal Sudarshanwar, Nikhil Mahajan, Laxman Singh Rajput and Pravin Tarde in pivotal roles. The movie is on YouTube and AppleTV.

5) Bhuj: The Pride Of India

In Ajay Devgn starrer, Navni Parihar portrayed the role of Indira Gandhi in the movie. The audience and critics highly appreciated the film. It also starred Pranitha Subhash, Ihana Dhillon, Nora Fatehi, Ammy Virk, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Sharad Kelkar in significant roles. The story revolved around the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. Bhuj: The Pride Of India is streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar.
