BTS Suga has recently found himself in the middle of a major controversy after being caught riding an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol. The incident has sparked widespread discussion among fans and industry experts alike, with many questioning the future of his role in the globally renowned Kpop group. However, according to recent reports, BTS remains committed to their planned 2025 comeback as a full group, with Suga still included in the lineup.
On August 6, 2024, Suga, also known as Min Yoongi, was apprehended by police for driving an electric scooter while intoxicated. Initially, reports suggested that Suga was riding a kickboard, but it was later clarified by the police that he was actually on a seated electric scooter. His blood alcohol content (BAC) was recorded at a shocking 0.227%, significantly above the legal limit of 0.08%. This level of intoxication has led to intense scrutiny, with comparisons being drawn to other high-profile DUI cases in South Korea.
In response to the incident, Suga issued an apology on Weverse, where he expressed deep regret for his actions. He admitted to violating traffic laws and apologized for his poor judgment, noting that he believed he could safely navigate the short distance home after drinking. Despite the apology, the incident has led to a criminal investigation, with Suga potentially facing serious legal consequences, including a hefty fine or even imprisonment.

The news of Suga's DUI has ignited a fierce debate online, particularly on Reddit and Twitter (now X), where fans and critics have been discussing the possible outcomes of the case. Some users have expressed shock at Suga's high BAC, noting that it is comparable to the levels recorded in other infamous DUI cases that resulted in severe penalties. One Reddit user commented, "His BAC was 0.227 per cent, which is insane. For most people, this level is borderline blacking out. It’s a miracle he made it home uninjured, without injuring anyone else."

Others have speculated about the potential punishment Suga might face, with some suggesting that he could be looking at a fine between KRW 10.0 million (about USD 7,290) and KRW 20.0 million (about USD 14,600), or even 2-5 years in prison. The severity of the penalty will depend on how the authorities classify his scooter under traffic law, as the type of vehicle can significantly impact the legal consequences.
"Suga is also thoroughly reflecting on this incident,& since BTS itself is a team with very strong teamwork extreme measures such as withdrawal are not being discussed..the prevailing opinion is that it will be difficult to postpone the full-length comeback in 2025"#SUGA #슈가 pic.twitter.com/Ixvc0dEeAl
