Chandu Champion Movie Review: 'Murlikant Petkar ladhta hai har haalat se har jazbaat se.... Oye hasta kaiko hai, Kartik Aaryan true superstar hai.' The 'Wonder Boy from India' exemplifies how he turns adversity into triumph, emerging as a formidable and inspiring figure. Based on a true story, the film chronicles the extraordinary life of Murlikant Petkar, a soldier and athlete, who clinched India's inaugural Paralympic gold in 1972.
Initially unnoticed, Petkar's journey from anonymity to acclaim is a testament to his determination to earn the recognition and respect he rightfully deserved. Chandu Champion aka Kartik delivers on every front with its inspirational storyline and stellar performances. Directed by the masterful Kabir Khan, the film not only entertains but also leaves a lasting impact.
Chandu Champion: Storyline
The film chronicles Murlikant Petkar's life from the 1950s to 2018, culminating in his deserving Padma Shri recognition. From nurturing Olympic dreams since childhood to confronting a turbulent bond with fate, faith and destiny, Petkar's journey from underdog to champion is an inspiring testament to his refusal to surrender to life's adversities. For him, respect comes not just from medals but from his unyielding drive to prove himself. He boldly challenges detractors with his mantra, "Oye Hasta kaiko hai," igniting a fierce determination within.
The film begins with elderly Murli seeking an Arjuna Award, narrating his life to police officers. Flashbacks unveil his teenage dream of Olympic gold, disrupted by unforeseen challenges. Despite enduring setbacks like surviving nine bullets and paralysis from the 1965 Kashmir war, he refused to surrender. Murli's resilience and pursuit of excellence redefine his story, culminating in a quest for recognition and honour. His transformation from overlooked aspirant to inspirational victor underscores the film's powerful narrative of triumph.
What did not work?
NOTHING! Everything worked perfectly for Chandu Champion! The film succeeds on multiple fronts, owing to Kabir Khan's deliberate approach in keeping the film grounded, allowing the story's subtlety and simplicity to resonate deeply. His adept use of humour enhances the film's relatability and adds a touch of light-heartedness, like the synchronised training at the army camp to "O Gore Gore Banke Chore." Khan's direction skillfully navigates through emotional highs and lows, such as the poignant airport scene where Murli confronts his fear of flying, capturing the essence of his character's resilience. Each scene serves a purpose in showcasing Murli's transformation from a determined youth to a seasoned champion, facing and overcoming obstacles with unwavering determination.
Direction and cast
Kartik Aaryan's performance as Chandu Champion is truly remarkable, establishing him unequivocally as a bona fide superstar. His portrayal exceeds expectations, capturing the essence of Murlikant Petkar's journey with depth. His portrayal not only embodies the spirit of resilience and determination but also elevates the film, leaving a lasting impression of excellence and commitment to his craft.
Bhuvan Arora shines as Petkar’s amiable sidekick, while Vijay Raaz as Tiger is able to roar loud. Rajpal Yadav is outstanding as usual. The characters contribute memorable moments that enhance the film's emotional resonance.
In Chandu Champion, Kabir Khan avoids the pitfalls of preachiness often seen in sports dramas and biopics. Instead, he meticulously portrays Murli's 'Hasta Kaiko Hai' to 'Mai Kar Lega' journey with its struggles, hardships, family trauma, faith, and dedication. The music -- Sarphira and Satyanaas, complements the story rather than standing out individually.

STARS: 4.5/5
Overall, the ensemble cast's performances enrich the storytelling, though the soundtrack could have further amplified the film's impact. It celebrates the human spirit and underscores the importance of perseverance and courage in the face of adversity, making it a memorable and impactful film.
