Visual effects (VFX) have revolutionized storytelling in cinema, bringing incredible and fantastical elements to life on screen. As VFX studios set new benchmarks, the cinematic experience has become more impressive than ever. Here are recent Hindi films where the VFX did wonders.

Munjya

The supernatural comedy horror film directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, starring Sharvari, Abhay Verma, Mona Singh, and Sathyaraj. Produced by Amar Kaushik and Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, it is the fourth film in the Maddock Supernatural Universe, focusing on the legend of Munjya inspired by Indian folklore and mythology. The film showcases exceptional VFX work, seamlessly blending with the narrative to create an immersive experience that rivals Hollywood productions.

Kalki 2898 AD

The movie exemplifies Indian cinema’s excellence in VFX, with its meticulously crafted climax scene by Prime Focus Group enhancing its visual appeal to Hollywood standards. Directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, this 2024 Indian Telugu-language epic science fiction film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. Inspired by Hindu scriptures, it marks the first installment in the planned Kalki Cinematic Universe. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD, the film follows a select group on a mission to save Kalki, the unborn child of SUM-80, a lab subject.

Brahmastra

The groundbreaking film, renowned for its extensive use of VFX that creates a stunning fantasy world, showcasing that Indian VFX can rival Hollywood in quality and creativity. Directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar, the 2022 Hindi-language fantasy action-adventure film stars an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna, with Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in cameo roles. The film's narrative, inspired by Hindu mythology, follows Shiva, an orphan musician with pyrokinetic powers, who discovers he is an astra—a weapon of immense energy. He must prevent the powerful Brahmastra from falling into the hands of dark forces connected to his past.

RRR

The monumental film celebrated for its spectacular VFX, which significantly enhance its grand scale and action sequences, showcasing the technical prowess of Indian VFX artists and studios. Directed by S. S. Rajamouli and co-written with V. Vijayendra Prasad, this 2022 Telugu-language epic period action drama features N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan in lead roles, supported by Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, and others. The story revolves around two Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, and their fight against the British Raj.

Bhediya

The film showcases impressive VFX, particularly in its transformation and supernatural scenes, matching Hollywood standards and enhancing the film’s fantastical elements. Directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan, this 2022 Indian Hindi-language supernatural comedy horror film stars Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Abhishek Banerjee, Deepak Dobriyal, and Paalin Kabak. The story, written by Niren Bhatt, is inspired by the legend of a shape-shifting werewolf (Yapum) from Arunachal Pradesh, who protects the jungle, even if it means resorting to violence. Bhediya is the third installment in the Maddock Supernatural Universe.
