Chhaya Kadam is basking in the success of hit releases like Laapataa Ladies and Madgaon Express. Another film which added a feather to her cap is All That We Imagine As Light which became the first Indian movie to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival this year. She shared that people in Cannes recognised her by her character (Manju Mai) from Laapataa Ladies. The actress, whose debut Hindi film was Singham Returns, revealed that earlier filmmakers never mentioned her name in the movie reviews which used to make her feel bad.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Chhaya said “It was the first Indian film to be screened at the main competition in 30 years, and we directly won an award! We had a story rooted in our motherland about women like us. For a subject like that to get selected here... I have no words.”

She also shared that people at Cannes acknowledged her by the name of the role she recently played in Laapataa Ladies. She stated, “People in Cannes also recognised me as Manju Mai (from Laapataa Ladies); they would say, 'hey Manju Mai, Chhaya Kadam'.”

Recalling her struggling days in the film industry, she added “Earlier, my struggle was to get work; now it is for good work.”

“Earlier, film reviews would miss out on mentioning my name, even if my character was important. Bura toh bahut lagta tha. But then I thought I should work so hard that people are compelled to mention my name in their reviews,” she added.
