Renowned Bengali theatre actor Manoj Mitra passed away at the age of 85 due to age-related issues at a hospital in Kolkata on November 12. The actor is a famous theatre personality known for writing and directing farces to highlight social and political issues. He was admitted to the hospital due to breathing trouble and other health-related ailments. Mitra took his last breath around 8:50 am on Tuesday. Confirming the news, a doctor told PTI “He was admitted to the hospital on November 3 with several illnesses. His condition kept on deteriorating and today at around 8.50 am he left us.”
The doctor also mentioned that the senior actor was earlier admitted to the hospital on September 20, 2024, due to several reasons including breathing issues, and an imbalance of sodium and potassium. He was then discharged from the hospital at the end of the month.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took her X account and offered her condolences to the family of the octogenarian actor. She tweeted, “Saddened by the demise of the famous actor, director and playwright, 'Banga Bibhushan' Manoj Mitra today morning. He had been a leading personality in our theatre and film worlds and his contributions have been immense. I convey my condolences to his family, friends and admirers.”

The star wrote over 100 plays throughout his career. He also won the Sangeet Natak Akademy Award for Best Playwright in 1985. Notably, he is known for his work in Banchharamer Bagan, Narak Guljar, Simul Parul, Teen Murti, Shatru Film, Abirbhab, Bourani and Shatru Pakhha to name a few.
