Sikh history and culture have served as a major source of inspiration for many Punjabi filmmakers. In fact, certain Punjabi films show the bravery of Sikh soldiers, historical events, and Sikh uprisings. The recent Punjabi release, Mastaney, has been ruling the box office like no other film from the aforementioned industry. Though Mastaney has been receiving praise from the Indian audience, it destroyed all opening records for Punjabi films in Australia and New Zealand.
Many critics as well as the audience have dubbed the must-watch owing to several factors. Let's have a look at those:
The Exceptional Plot
Tarsem Jassar’s movie 'Mastaney' is set in the 80s and revolves around the bravery of Sikh warriors who stood against the invasion of Nader Shah in Delhi.
The narrative revolves around a significant historical event that took place in 1739 when Nadar Shah's powerful army suddenly ran across the Sikh Rebellions. Nadar tries to apprehend them, but his attempts are unsuccessful. Five average individuals who were recruited to reenact the Sikh Rebellions go on various experiences throughout the tale. But as time goes on, people gradually come to understand the true meaning of Sikhism and the principles it upholds.
The Stellar Star Cast
'Mastaney' includes some of the very talented actors from the Punjabi as well as Bollywood industry. The stellar star cast includes Tarsem Jassar as Zahoor, Gurpreet Ghuggi as Kalandar, Karamjit Anmol as Basheera, Baninderjit Singh as Feena, Simi Chahal as Noor, Rahul Dev as Nadar Shah, Arif Zakaria as Nadar Shah.
VFX & Background Score
'Mastaney's music, background soundtrack, and visual effects are top-notch. The entire VFX has been done in Punjab, as stated by Tarsem Jassar. He said, “Sharan put together a VFX team but Covid created disruptions and the team got dismantled while the work was underway, but Sharan did not lose heart and got a team together again. We have worked very hard and done a lot of work for this film and made it with a lot of dedication.”
Blockbuster reviews and ratings
IMDb describes the plot as follows, "Set in 1739, Nadar Shah's undefeated army was attacked by Sikh rebellions. Nadar demands to arrest them, but it doesn't work out. Five ordinary men are hired to play Sikh rebellions, but over time, they learn what Sikhs are."
'Mastaney' has been given 9.4 rating out of 10, which means the Sharan Art-directorial is a perfect cinematic watch.
