Bawaal Movie Review: Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan step into the world of maestro director Nitesh Tiwari where the magic happens every time. The filmmaker is known to hook the audience with his creative way of storytelling which perfectly blends comedy, drama, and an important underlying message into a film that leaves the viewers feeling cathartic. Bawaal is just another example of his excellence. The film is about the striking similarities between World War II and our internal war; the fight between the past, present, and the future; and the reality we do not want to face.
Bawaal Movie Plot
In Bawaal, Varun Dhawan plays the role of a history teacher named 'Ajju Bhaiya' who is very image conscious and his larger-than-life personality is resting on a bed of lies. His disappointment in his life and failures in his career are his only driving force. He is so pretentious that he marries an educated and gorgeous Jahnvi Kapoor aka Nisha as he thinks she is synonymous with perfection and would look good as his better half in front of the society. However, his world turns upside down when this flawless image of a marriage blurs with a truth.
Coincidentally, his perfect life as a history teacher also hits a roadblock when he slaps an MLA's son. To protect his alternate reality, Ajay and Nisha leave for Europe to trace World War 2, unmindful of what life lessons they are going to learn.

Bawaal Cast and Direction
Bawaal has Nitesh Tiwari written all over it. The filmmaker beautifully brings the innocence of the characters to the screen without taking away from their faults and imperfections. He constantly through his characters forces the viewers to question themselves about their life choices. The flashbacks from World War II drawing parallels with the present and the future only make the execution of this tricky narrative more appealing and who better than Nitesh Tiwari to do it? He has written the script along with Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Piyush Gupta, Nikhil Mehrotra, and Shreyas Jain who have once again proved- Story Is The King.
The first half of the film relies mostly on setting the stage for the gruesome reminders of WWII and how it is relevant even today, Interestingly, the gory details shown in the second half only help to accentuate the fact that the physical war will eventually end but the war inside you is never-ending. The emotionally driven scenes get the perfect comic relief which is another beautiful ingredient of an entertaining film.

To add to Nitesh Tiwari's brilliance, Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor become the perfect mediums. This is the first time they share the screen and manage to bring out the best in each other. While Dhawan never once gives a reason to question his acting mettle, Janhvi brings a certain genuineness to the screen that makes us sympathize with her all the more. This can easily be called her career's best performance.

Even the supporting actors- from Varun Dhawan's parents to his friend and students- everyone adds to the endearing tale with their individual style and strong screen presence.
Final Verdict
Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan starrer Bawaal firmly states that in the end, people will remember your truth and not your lies. It is an empathetic and non-judgemental take on life choices and how they impact relationships. A little predictable but entertaining watch for this weekend on Prime Video.
