Namastey London Movie Review: Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer romantic comedy movie was one of the most popular and hit movies of the late 2000s. When the film released in 2007, it gained immense love from the audience. Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s directorial follows the story of an Indian born man in London, who forces his daughter to marry his friend’s son during his visit to his homeland India with family. But here’s the twist, the girl refuses to accept him as her husband when she returns to London. The film beautifully portrays the essence of true love of a young Indian man who keeps his hope alive that his love will win and his newly wedded wife will come back to him. But is it worth the wait? The question arises as the girl he loves has cheated on him and her own family by taking advantage of their trust.

Jazz, played by Katrina Kaif, cannot be completely blamed as her father forced her to get married to someone she hardly knows in a short period of time, that too at an unknown place for her. While many question Jazz’s actions of breaking her family’s trust, the movie hardly ever calls out the regressive nature of the father, played by Rishi Kapoor. The film does not deliver any moral values. Rather, justifies playing with the emotions of people, such as a father’s regressive mindset, who plans and executes his daughter’s marriage without her consent. At the same time, Jazz uses an innocent man’s feelings and trust to accomplish her previously set plan. Playing with each other’s emotions has been shown in a positive way in the movie, which is a big ‘No’ for today’s generation.

Namastey London Final Verdict- 2.5/5 Stars

The performances in the film were good, except Katrina Kaif, who seems to be learning some acting skills and brushing up her Hindi accent at that time. Akshay Kumar portrayed the pain of a lover very diligently. Rishi Kapoor was always an icon and he proved himself in every scene in the movie. Upen Patel, who played Jazz’s family friend, showcased his charm and acting chops every time he appeared on the screen. Nina Wadia, who essayed the role of Jazz’s mother, deserved to have a special mention but her character sketch was not well crafted.

Coming back to the storyline, this generation might not accept the regressive ideology of a father who forces his daughter to marry someone of his choice or the love story of the girl, who has refused to accept a man after marrying him. It might be called a ‘classic’ when it released 18 years ago, but this generation wouldn’t accept the flaws in the movie. Despite being a romantic comedy movie, the humour used in the film falls flat. It can rather be called a painful love story of a man who falls in love with a girl he doesn’t deserve, which makes the movie dull as it could not deliver as per the genre. The soundtracks are truly iconic, but have been shown at the wrong points and destroy the emotions in seconds. For example, the song Main Jahaan Rahoon was shown during the family’s India tour, capturing different parts of the country, the pain expressed in the music does not sync with the visuals. The film is a one-time watch, that too only on Television or on OTT.
