Netflix has recently announced the cancellation of second seasons for some beloved Korean and Japanese dramas, leaving fans in suspense about the fate of their favourite shows. While hits like 'Sweet Home' and 'All of Us Are Dead' are set to return for more heart-pounding action, it's a bittersweet moment for enthusiasts of certain dramas featuring top-tier actors such as Ahn Hyo Seop and Ji Chang Wook.
A Time Called You (2023)
One notable casualty in this drama purge is 'A Time Called You', a time-slip masterpiece starring Ahn Hyo Seop, Jeon Yeo Been, and Kang Hoon. The series, directed by Kim Jin Won and Choi Hyo Bi, captured viewers' hearts as a woman mourning a lost love mysteriously travels back to 1998, encountering a man strikingly resembling her deceased partner. Unfortunately, the journey ends here as Netflix categorizes the show as a Limited Series, leaving fans yearning for more.
Celebrity (2023)
Another casualty in this Netflix culling is the intriguing drama 'Celebrity', which offered a glimpse into the tumultuous world of social media influencers. Starring Park Gyu Young, Kang Min Hyuk, and Lee Chung Ah, the show directed by Kim Cheol Kyu and Kim Yi Young won't be returning for a second season. 'Celebrity' exposed the dark underbelly of online stardom, prompting viewers to question the cost of digital popularity.
The Days (2023)
Turning our attention to Japanese dramas, 'The Days' also faced the chopping block. With a gripping narrative centred around the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the show featuring Koji Yakusho, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Fumiyo Kohinata won't be renewed for the next season. The drama's exploration of heroes and villains in the face of an invisible threat kept viewers on the edge of their seats, making its cancellation a significant loss for fans.
First Love (2023)
'First Love', hailed as one of the best romantic shows of 2023, also failed to secure a second season. Starring Hikari Mitsushima, Takeru Satoh, and Rikako Yagi, the Japanese drama delved into the lives of childhood dance partners turned ambitious teenagers. The show raised poignant questions about reigniting passion and proving love for dance in the face of adult responsibilities.
Glitch (2022)
The cancellation spree continues with 'Glitch', a suspenseful drama starring Jeon Yeo Been and NANA. The storyline follows a young woman's quest to unravel the mystery behind her boyfriend's disappearance, leading her into a wild conspiracy. Unfortunately, Netflix won't renew the series, leaving fans hanging on the edge of unresolved mysteries.
Mask Girl (2023)
'Mask Girl', featuring Ko Hyun Jung, Ahn Jae Hong, and Yeom Hye Ran, also falls victim to the cancellation wave. The story revolves around an office worker who transforms into a masked internet personality to escape insecurities about her appearance. However, a series of unfortunate events takes the narrative in a dark direction, concluding with no hope for a second season.
The Sound of Magic (2022)
Lastly, the enchanting Kdrama 'The Sound of Magic', starring Ji Chang Wook, Choi Sung Eun, and Hwang In Youp, won't be gracing screens with a new season. Directed by Kim Sung Youn and Kim Min Jeong, the show followed a magician living in an abandoned theme park, offering hope to a disenchanted teen facing harsh realities.
The 2024 Netflix lineup promises new and exciting content as fans bid farewell to these dramas. However, the void left by these cancelled second seasons raises the question: which dramas will capture our hearts and keep us on the edge of our seats in the coming year? Only time will tell as Netflix continues to shape the landscape of K-drama entertainment.
