During an interview with ETimes in 2021, Sharman Joshi, who played Raju, recalled filming the sequence with Aamir and Madhavan.
“I especially remember the one scene where Aamir, Maddy and I were drunk and cursing Boman Irani’s character in the film,” Sharman said. He added that, “Aamir suggested that we drink and perform.”
According to Sharman, he and Aamir arrived on set on time to shoot. However, R Madhavan was running late because of other work. By the time Madhavan reached the location, Sharman and Aamir were already intoxicated. Aamir then asked Madhavan to catch up quickly.
“By the time we were ready for the scene, we were a little too high, but Maddy was even more so. He performed the scene brilliantly!” Sharman recalled.
R Madhavan Confirmed The Story
During a podcast appearance on BeerBiceps in March 2024, Madhavan reflected on this memorable moment.
He offered a precise timeline of the incident. He explained that the shoot was expected to start at 9 PM and the actors would start drinking an hour earlier. By 8:45 PM, they had already consumed three or four pegs.
But there was a technical problem with the lighting, which meant a delay in shooting.
Madhavan also explained the thinking behind Aamir’s suggestion: “Aamir’s idea was that in drunk scenes, you should never act like you’re drunk. You should drink and act like you’re normal.”
Madhavan recalled that, by the time filming began, they believed they were behaving normally. Instead, they were taking much longer to deliver their lines.
The Aftermath
By the time Hirani finally got the takes he needed, dawn was creeping up, the film budget for that night had taken a hit, and the three leads were barely standing.
Yet, when the final cut hit theatres in December 2009, that staircase confrontation anchored the emotional core of the film's first half.
