Haq, which was directed by Suparn S. Varma and supported by Junglee Pictures not only narrates a story but also rekindles a conversation that the younger generation shouldn't be afraid to engage with. But Shah Bano's daughter, Siddiqua Begum, moved to court and asked that the movie's release and promotion be banned. She asserted that Haq was directly influenced by the events and life of her late mother, Shah Bano. However, Haq's legal team fiercely refuted the accusations.

Haq legal team explained that the courtroom drama is based on the famous Supreme Court ruling in the Mohd Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case and is not a biographical reenactment. The High Court's refusal to put any limits on the movie, allowing its scheduled release, suggests that the court has taken these concerns into consideration.

Haq received positive early reviews for its compelling story and bold approach to a delicate historical period Despite all of this. But what started out as a tale of a woman's struggle for respect has now devolved into a contentious maelstrom. As #Banhaq trends on X (previously Twitter), some members of the community have called for a ban, accusing the movie of misrepresenting males and Sharia law.

Online critics have compared Haq to politically motivated movies like The Kashmir Files and The Sabarmati Report, claiming that it aims to sow discord among communities. However, many are defending the movie, claiming that it bravely revives a long-suppressed discussion about women's rights and reveals the socio-political manipulation that led the Rajiv Gandhi government to reverse the Supreme Court's ruling in the Shah Bano case.
