Haq, a courtroom drama starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi, is now trending on social media. The movie has dominated the news since its OTT debut on Netflix on January 2, 2026. The film is currently ranked #1 on Netflix India as of January 5, 2026. Shah Bano Begum was a Muslim woman who was married to Mohammed Ahmed Khan, a well-known lawyer. Together, the couple had five children after being married in 1932. Ahmed later married a younger woman and lived with both wives for a few years before leaving Shah Bano, who was 62 at the time. In 1978, he broke his pledge to give her Rs 200 for maintenance.
Haq's popularity on the OTT platform Netflix brought Shah Bano's actual occurrence, which served as its inspiration, back into the spotlight.
What Is The Age Gap Between Shah Bano And Mohd Ahmed Khan?
Shah Bano's youngest son, Jameel Ahmad, said in a 2017 interview with The Quint that his mother divorced Mohammed Ahmed Khan in 1979 at the age of sixty. This indicates that she was born in 1919. Shah Bano's husband, Mohd. Ahmed Khan, a well-known lawyer in Indore, died in 2006 at the age of 94, according to a report published in the Hindustan Times. This indicates that Ahmed was born in 1912. The Muslim couple was seven years apart in age, if the report is accurate.
Mohd. Ahmed Khan had two marriages. In 1932, he married Shah Bano. He did, however, remarried a younger woman years later. Jameel Ahmad, Shah Bano's youngest son, disclosed in the same interview that his father's second wife was 14 years younger than him. He also disclosed the reasons for his father's decision to file for divorce from Shah Bano.
"My father got married twice, and my mother, Shah Bano, was his first wife. The second wife of my father was 14 years younger than him. Both ladies used to fight endlessly over trivial issues. That was the reason why my father decided to divorce my mother."

There are really tense scenes in Haq as the two make their case, because the film dramatises the real events. The events detailed in Jigna Vora's book Bano: Bharat ki Beti are 'fictionalised and dramatised' in the movie, according to its makers.
Influenced by the real-life Shah Bano case, Yami portrayed Shazia Bano, while Emraan Hashmi played her husband Abbas, who was influenced by real-life Mohammed Ahmed Khan, while Vartika Singh portrayed Saira Jahan, Abbas's second wife.
