Karur Rally Stampede: Tamil Nadu is mourning after a tragic stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur claimed at least 39 lives, including 10 children. The devastating incident has shocked the entire state, with several film stars and political leaders expressing their condolences. The rally was organised by Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), as a major show of political strength. Thousands of people gathered under the scorching sun, eager to see the popular actor. However, overcrowding, poor arrangements, and miscommunication led to chaos. The tragedy unfolded as people, exhausted and dehydrated, struggled in the massive crowd. Vijay had to cut short his address midway as the situation worsened.
Meanwhile, veteran actor Kamal Haasan expressed deep grief, saying the news left his “heart trembling.” He appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to ensure medical support and relief for the survivors. Rajinikanth also called the incident “immensely grievous,” offering condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

Utter nonsense. Hearing that more than 30 people including children losing their lives over a stampede in actor/politician Vijay’s rally is heartwrenching and totally not right.

What Went Wrong At Vijay’s Rally?
Police and organisers revealed that permission had been granted for the rally between 3 pm and 10 pm. However, the official TVK social media account announced that Vijay would arrive at noon. This led thousands to gather from the morning itself. By the time Vijay arrived at 7:40 pm, after hours of waiting under the sun, the crowd had swelled to nearly 27,000 people far more than the estimated 10,000 expected. Many had already collapsed from dehydration and exhaustion due to the lack of food, water, and shelter. The situation spiralled out of control, resulting in a stampede that claimed dozens of lives.

However, hours after the tragedy, Vijay himself broke his silence on social media. In an emotional statement, he said, “My heart is shattered; I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.” According to official reports, 12 men, 16 women, and 10 children were among the victims. The Director General of Police, G Venkataraman, cited overcrowding, delays, and poor facilities as the primary reasons behind the disaster.
