Veteran actress B. Saroja Devi, a beloved icon in Indian cinema, has sadly passed away at the age of 87 due to age-related health issues. According to reports, she was found unconscious at her home in Malleswaram, Bengaluru. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Saroja Devi was a legendary figure who made her mark across multiple film industries in India. She acted in over 200 movies in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, earning her the title Chaturbhasha Taare, meaning ‘Four-language Star.’ Known for her graceful performances and emotional depth, she was fondly called ‘Abhinaya Saraswathi’ and ‘Kannadathu Paingili’ by her fans.

Her journey into movies began at the young age of 17 with the Kannada movie Mahakavi Kalidasa in 1955. Just a few years later, she became a major star with her role opposite M.G. Ramachandran in Nadodi Mannan (1958). The Tamil movie turned her into a household name, especially in Tamil cinema.

Over the years, Saroja Devi received many prestigious honours. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1969 and later the Padma Bhushan in 1992 for her contributions to Indian cinema. She also received the Kalaimamani Award from the Tamil Nadu government and was conferred with an honorary doctorate by Bangalore University.

Meanwhile, her influence wasn’t limited to acting. She played important roles off-screen as well. She served as the vice-president of the Kannada Chalanchitra Sangha and chairing the jury at the 53rd National Film Awards. Her passion and dedication to the film industry left a lasting impact on generations of actors and filmmakers.

BJP MLA Khusbu Sundar, was among the first to pay an emotional tribute on social media. SPosting on X (formerly Twitter), he shared a heartfelt message which read, “An era gold golden cinema comes to an end. #SarojaDevi amma  was the greatest of all times . No other female actor in south has ever enjoyed the name and fame as her. Such a lovable adorable soul she was. Had a great rapport with her. My trip to Bengaluru was incomplete without meeting her. And whenever in chennai, she would call. Will miss her immensely. Rest in peace Amma. Om Shanti” 

The Indian film industry is deeply saddened by her loss. B. Saroja Devi will be remembered not just for her extraordinary acting talent, but also for her lifelong dedication to cinema.
