Srikanth Odela's period action movie The Paradise got the biggest opening of Nani's 18-year career. It also became his first film to cross Rs 100 crore at the domestic box office. The action thriller has had a mixed response from viewers, and Nani has now addressed it.
Nani On Polarised Reviews For The Paradise
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor admitted that his team could have delivered a better product if they had more time during post-production.
Nani said he is not from a film background, and the people around him are honest with him. He explained that this honesty comes from people who don't hold back. "I'm not from a cinema background. The people I'm surrounded with are extremely honest to me. There's no filter at all."
He said even some of his biggest hits got the same blunt reaction at home.
"My friends and family would say, 'We don't want to watch that film, we didn't like it at all...' So I was always very close to reality… I've always watched films in the theatre; I know that I am one among the audience. I don't think the audience is a separate entity. I always feel that if I like it, they would like it too... I'm one of them."
Nani also said he saw The Paradise before its release. He felt some portions would work, including the interval point, the score and the childhood portion.
He added, "Anything they (the audience) have been mentioning, logically or something where it dipped or something which didn't work for them... I did see all of that. I felt that before. I also knew which portions would work and land… As long as you can be detached from your own work and see it as the audience, it will always be clear. And I don't know how not to do that, I don't know how to get carried away."
The Paradise was first set to release on March 26 this year. It was moved to August 21, and finally came out on September 25. Along the way, it stayed clear of clashes with Ranveer Singh's spy thriller Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge and Yash's action thriller Toxic: A Fairytale for Grownups, respectively.
