Filmmaker Mohit Suri has experienced a rollercoaster journey in Bollywood, filled with both notable successes and challenging setbacks. After struggling through a rough phase with films like Malang and Ek Villain Returns, which failed to create the desired impact at the box office, Mohit managed to bounce back in a big way with Saiyaara. The film turned out to be his biggest blockbuster to date, raking in over Rs 500 crore worldwide and firmly re-establishing him as a bankable director.
Despite this impressive comeback, Mohit recently opened up about one of the biggest disappointments of his career—the fact that he lost out on directing Aashiqui 3, a project that he had been personally nurturing and developing for quite some time. In a conversation with Shubhankar Mishra on YouTube, Mohit revealed, "They didn’t want to wait for me to fine-tune the script. It’s true they judged me based on my recent flops. Even my own family, who were part of the decision-making, weren’t willing to wait. I don’t blame them, it’s a business. But I wasn’t trying to prove them wrong—I wanted to prove myself wrong."
Mohit opened up about the mental pressure he faced after the failure of Ek Villain Returns. He said, "Never listen to anybody when you’re low, because they’ll push you further down. When you’ve been working for 20 years and your film flops, the fear is that the best is behind you. People had already started saying that."
"With Ek Villain 2, I was ticking boxes—making a sequel, remixing songs, casting multiple leads. I wanted to recreate the Rs 16 crore opening of Ek Villain, but I was making the film for the wrong reasons. It blew up in my face," he further added.
Mohit further added that he has no regrets on losing Aashiqui 3 after the success of Saiyaara. "How can I make Aashiqui without Aditya and Shraddha? The first film opened at ₹3 crore—not huge numbers—but it became a cult classic over time. Today, people want to use the brand name to create a project. I don’t know if I fit into that anymore," he explained.
