Anurag Kashyap has an image of delivering gritty, unconventional and bold movies that offer the unflinching reality of life. With movies like Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly, Dev D and more, the director has cemented his position in the industry as one of the best filmmakers in Indian cinema. With fame comes clashes! The director has been involved in several controversies and disagreements every now and then, making him the centre of the headlines. One of his famous controversies revolved around Udta Punjab, which he co-produced along with Ektaa Kapoor. At the time of its release, Anurag Kashyap was in the news as he got embroiled in a clash with Pahlaj Nihalani.
Clash Between Anurag Kashyap And Pahlaj Nihalani:
Anurag Kashyap stood against Pahlaj Nihalani, a former CBFC chairman and producer, when the board asked for 94 cuts in the movie. During a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Pahlaj Nihalani recounted his clash with the director and revealed that Ektaa Kapoor agreed to the cuts asked by the censor board, but Anurag objected to the decision.
Pahlaj Nihalani On Udta Punjab’s Controversy:
He shared, “They were going to accept the cuts. His (Anurag Kashyap) film was not turning hot enough, despite creating so many controversies around it. Then Jeetendra (father of Ektaa Kapoor) and CEO of the production company even came to get the certificate in the office, they came to get the cuts. We even had passed the language where it deserved, but wherever we found it unnecessary, we imposed cuts."

Pahlaj Nihalani’s Accusations Towards Anurag Kashyap:
Further, the producer claimed that Anurag Kashyap had a unique way of generating buzz around his movies. He candidly said, “He thought six days are left for the film’s release, but it is not gaining any traction. This was Anurag‘s play, and he did it all the time. He would leak videos, this was his business point, and he cashes in on that."
About Udta Punjab Controversy:
For those who are unaware, helmed by Abhishek Chaubey, Udta Punjab was constantly under the CBFC scanner at the time of its release. The board suggested several cuts; deletion of certain scenes and muting of some of the dialogues. The CBFC objected to scenes of drug use and references to Punjab, including the names of cities like Jalandhar, Chandigarh and Amritsar. The board also suggested the deletion of a scene where the lead character urinated in front of a crowd and demanded disclaimers acknowledging the government’s efforts to tackle the drug problem.
