Ram Gopal Varma On Social Media Ban: The purported February 4 death of three young sisters in Ghaziabad has rekindled the national conversation about digital addiction and sparked new proposals to limit or outright prohibit children's access to social media in India. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has been adamantly against the concept of prohibiting minors under 16 from using social media, as calls for stricter control increase.

Ram Gopal Varma contended that in the information-driven world of today, such policies could do more harm than good to youth. He wrote a thorough statement titled 'BAN THE BANNERS' on social media on Monday.

Ram Gopal Varma said that well-meaning limitations run the risk of denying kids access to vital resources that influence modern education and skill development. According to him, restricting access would put Indian kids at a disadvantage in the fiercely competitive global industry.

Ram Gopal Varma said, "The core problem with banning social media to protect children under 16 from so-called offensive content also will handicap them in today’s hyper-competitive global information economy. It’s foolish to think social media is just a frivolous distraction because in today’s times, it’s the primary pipeline for real-time knowledge, skills, and networks that determine who gets ahead."

The filmmaker stated it is 'foolish' to consider social media to be just a pointless diversion and that it has evolved into a 'primary pipeline for real-time knowledge, skills, and networks that determine who gets ahead.'

Ram Gopal Varma noted that such a restriction would ultimately result in 'stark competitive inequality' since it would deprive Indian children of chances, breaking news, and a variety of viewpoints.

The director maintained that such prohibitions would not significantly protect kids and would simply produce a generation of 'digital latecomers'. The systematic cost of information deprivation in a competitive society is far greater than the 'offensive content' argument, he continued.

Ghaziabad Triple Suicide Case

Earlier this week, three young sisters reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the ninth story of their flat, according to Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, police. The father took away the three girls' cell phones because he thought they were too fixated on Korean culture, which caused them to become depressed, police reported news agency PTI.
