Madhuri Dixit's Bollywood journey began with struggles, flops, and even family ridicule, leading her to briefly quit films. However, her breakout role in Tezaab (1988) catapulted her to stardom overnight. Despite subsequent successes, she faced personal challenges, including a distressing experience on set where she was asked to do a scene that made her uncomfortable.

Madhuri Dixit was not immune to the pressures of the industry. In 1989, during the filming of Shanakht, the actress was asked to remove her blouse, a request that made her uncomfortable. The film was helmed by director Tinnu Anand who had explained the scene to her during initial narration. Initially, she tentatively agreed, but when the time came to film the scene, she firmly declined. However, the director gave her an ultimatum to either comply with the request or leave the film.

In a past interview with Radio Nasha, the director recounted the scene in which Amitabh Bachchan’s character is chained and unable to defend himself and Madhuri Dixit’s character steps in and says, "Why attack a man in chains when there’s a woman standing before him?" "I told her she would need to remove her blouse, we’d show her in a bra, nothing hidden behind haystacks or cleverly shot. It was a pivotal moment in the story. I even told her I wanted to film it on the first day," he further added.

Tinnu stated that Madhuri refused to film the scene on the first day of filming. "I asked what had changed. She simply said, ‘Tinnu, I don’t want to do this scene.’ I told her, ‘I’m sorry, but you must. Otherwise, please say goodbye to the film.’" Amitabh Bachchan tried to mediate, saying, "Let it go. Why argue? If she’s uncomfortable…" To which Tinnu Anand replied, "She should have objected before signing on."

Madhuri Dixit initially refused to film a scene that made her uncomfortable, but later relented after her secretary spoke with director Tinnu Anand. Despite this, the film Shanakht ultimately failed to make an impact at the box office, turning out to be a flop.
