Anupamaa, a popular Hindi television show, led by Rupali Ganguly, has always made headlines but this time for a different reason. A massive fire broke out early this morning (on Friday) on the set of the serial in Film City, Mumbai. The fire that started at 5 am completely destroyed the set just two hours before the commencement of the filming. Many workers and crews were present at the time of the incident, though no casualties have been reported yet. The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has demanded a strong action in the wake of the incident.

The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to order a high-level judicial inquiry into the fire breakout incident. AICWA has also insisted on the immediate suspension of the Film City Management Director and Mumbai’s Labour Commissioner. The association blames both for failing to enforce fire safety protocols and for allegedly enabling producers to deviate from mandatory precautions through inaction or intrigue. The association has also called for a criminal FIR to be lodged against the production house and the television channel behind Anupamaa, as well as the Film City Managing Director and Labour Commissioner.

The association further voiced concerns that the fire could have been intentionally set to file fraudulent insurance claims, and also fears that potential casualties might be concealed to evade public scrutiny and legal repercussions. The AICWA urged authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation and verify if the incident claimed any lives. Additionally, the association has called for a full fire safety audit of all film sets and studios across Maharashtra, demanding immediate blacklisting of any producer, channel or production house found in violation of fire safety regulations.

This incident highlights a recurring pattern of frequent fires in Mumbai’s film studios. It underscores the negligence of production teams and authorities in upholding basic fire safety standards. Meanwhile, industry insiders have also pointed out that studios often bypass crucial fire audits, jeopardising the lives of hundreds of workers and artists daily. With thousands of daily wage workers, technicians, and backstage crew relying on secure working environments, the need for accountability has never been more urgent. The AICWA has assured that without strong and prompt measures, the system will continue to endanger lives in the pursuit of entertainment.
