Hum Saath Saath Hai, one of the most popular movies in 1999, left a mark for its elaborate settings, ensemble cast, and traditional family-values-based plot. Additionally, the movie's strong point was the chemistry between Salman Khan and Sonali Bendre. For the uninitiated, Sonali portrayed 'Preeti', who was engaged to 'Prem', played by Salman Khan.
Sonali Bendre thought back on her on-set exchange with Salman Khan in Hum Saath Saath Hain. She remembered that the two frequently argued, and she was annoyed when he made expressions in her close-ups.
Sonali Bendre recounted her frequent arguments with Salman Khan and the reasons he made it hard for her to work in an interview with Bllywood Bubble. "We were fighting all the time. I promise you, I mean, you know I should ask Salman about it then. Because whenever I was giving close-ups, Salman would make faces at me. And I would get so pissed off that I would say, 'What the hell?'," she said.
Sonali Bendre was initially irritated, but she eventually realised that beneath Salman Khan's rough exterior, he was a gentle person. He makes it hard for people to like him, she acknowledged. "Actually, he puts on a really rough exterior, but he's a softy. But you know what it took me time because I was like, what the hell, but it took me a while actually to figure out that he's a nice guy," she added.

Sonali Bendre revealed in the same interview that the original concept was for her character, "Dr. Preeti," to be shown as a contemporary girl dressed in Western attire. However, Sonali believed that it was important for her character to portray an Indian upbringing because she herself comes from a middle-class Maharashtrian family. Sooraj Barjatya, the director of the movie, complied with her request, but only on the proviso that she would keep wearing the nose ring she wore to the auditions.
