It's July 2024, and the Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross, are directing on location in Atlanta for the fifth and final season of their hit Netflix series, Stranger Things. The show, which catapulted Netflix into a major player in the entertainment industry, is nearing its conclusion and the brothers are deeply invested in bringing their vision to life. They're currently working on the feature-length fourth episode, "Sorcerer", and today's scene, Day 131 of the yearlong shoot, is a pivotal moment for Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown.

The scene places Eleven at the threshold of a game-changing revelation and the tension is palpable on set. Matt and Ross sit at the monitors, watching the action unfold. As the crew prepares to capture the moment when Eleven passes through the mysterious door, Brown takes a break to review the playback of what she's just filmed. The atmosphere is focused, with the Duffer brothers carefully guiding the production to ensure that the emotional intensity of the scene is captured on film.

As they work to bring the season to a close, they're acutely aware of the significance of this final chapter and the impact it will have on the show's devoted fanbase. With the cameras poised to roll, the Duffer brothers are ready to capture the next crucial moment in Eleven's journey, one that will propel the story toward its conclusion.

Talking about the final season, Matt Duffer said, "We are more confident and knowledgeable than we were back then. But there’s all these other added pressures now. It feels like there’s the Eye of Sauron on you, a lot of people watching, lots of expectations. A lot of money is being spent."

The Duffer brothers are going all-out for the final season of Stranger Things, leaving nothing on the table. "Now we're in the final season, we don't have to hold anything back," Matt Duffer said in a conversation with Empire. Ross added, "We didn't want to tie everything into a perfect bow, but I think we answer most questions and resolve every arc."

The brothers promised a definitive ending to the story, with bigger, bolder and stranger episodes. They teased massive battles, likening them to Game of Thrones' Battle of the Bastards, with episodes 4 ("Sorcerer") and 8 being particularly epic. "Sorcerer" was the most logistically insane shoot of their lives, according to the duo. Initially, they pitched the season to Netflix thinking it would be similar in scale to Season 4, but it ended up being much bigger, said Matt with a grin.

The Duffer Brothers, creators of Stranger Things, revealed their Paramount deal was driven by a lifelong dream to release original feature films in theaters. Speaking at Variety's Entertainment and Technology Summit, they shared their excitement about producing big-screen movies and collaborating with Paramount's team. This four-year exclusive deal starts in 2026, following Stranger Things' conclusion, and will include film, TV and streaming projects through their production company, Upside Down Pictures.

Ross said, "When Matt and I were talking about what we want to do next, it really came down to we wanted to do a movie, specifically an original movie — a big original film and theatrical is so important to us."
