The awards season is officially here and there is a lot of hype about the Oscar Awards 2023 in India. This is because three films are nominated for the 95th Academy Awards -- RRR (Best Song for "Naatu Naatu"), "All That Breathes" (Best Documentary Feature) and "The Elephant Whisperers" (Best Documentary Short). Every year, there is a debate regarding India's official submission to the Oscars in the 'Best International Feature Film' category.
Ahead of Oscars 2023, take a look at Indian films which had a better shot of getting Oscar nominations instead of the official submissions.
RRR Over Chello Show:
When Chello Show was chosen as India's official submission to Oscars 2023 instead of RRR, many people were surprised by this decision of FFI. Moreover, SS Rajmouli admitted that RRR had a better chance of getting an Oscar nomination instead of Chello Show. In the end, Chello Show was out of the race in the 'Best International Feature Film' category.
Paan Singh Tomar Over Barfi:
In 2012, Indian cinema was blessed with some brilliant films like Gangs Of Wasseypur, Pan Singh Tomar, and Kahani, among others. Barfi was also one of the most successful films in 2012 and was loved by the audience. But Barfi had taken inspiration from many films like Charlie Chaplin's City of Lights. Therefore, many pointed out that Barfi was not the right choice for 'Best International Feature Film'.
Tumbbad Over Gully Boy:
Gully Boy was one of the most successful films in 2019 and received many awards in India as well. But many people were disappointed when Gully Boy was sent as the official entry from India to the Oscars 2023 and felt that Tumbbad and Article 15 were more deserving.
Swades Over Paheli:
Both Swades and Paheli starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role. Swades revolves around a NASA engineer, Mohan, who comes back to India after a long time and gets a huge cultural shock. It was considered more worthy of being the official submission to the Oscars instead of Paheli, which was not even successful in India.
The Lunchbox Over The Good Road:
The Lunchbox received many accolades internationally and was well-received by both critics and the audience. The Good Road was sent as the official submission to the Oscars instead of The Lunchbox which lead to all of the criticism.
