About Frankenstein: Del Toro had long envisioned a faithful adaptation of Frankenstein as a passion project. Initially developed at Universal Pictures with longtime collaborator Doug Jones considered for the role of the Creature, the project was shelved amid changes to Universal’s Dark Universe plans. Netflix later revived the film in 2023, casting Elordi in the iconic role. Filming took place between February and September 2024, with the visual aesthetic heavily inspired by the late artist Bernie Wrightson’s illustrated work on Frankenstein.
The film premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 30, 2025, before receiving a limited theatrical release in the US on October 17 and a global Netflix release on November 7. Frankenstein was met with largely positive critical reception and was named among the top ten films of 2025 by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. It also earned multiple accolades, including five nominations at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards and recognition at the 98th Academy Awards.
