On October 22, 2026, Netflix released the official trailer for Akka. It is a crime drama starring Radhika Apte and Keerthy Suresh. The trailer introduces a fictional 1980s South Indian kingdom, Pernuru, where women control the hierarchy.
In Pernuru, women have built, governed and protected their power across generations.
Akka Trailer: How Pernuru Puts Women At The Centre Of Power
In the trailer of Akka, it is clarified that in Pernuru women occupy positions of authority. The society has been structured around women’s control and how they have been ruling for generations.
Netflix India series head Tanya Bami has described the setting as a fictional world where women are ‘not just part of the story, they are the power centre’.
Akka is far from familiar narratives in which a woman must fight her way into a male-dominated institution. In Pernuru, women already have the authority to establish rules, protect family interests and determine the ruling order.
But the Akka trailer also questions the women in bigger positions. It interrogates how, when power is inherited rather than equally distributed, women can produce rivalries and exclusion.
In an interview with The Free Press Journal, writer-director Dharmaraj Shetty explained that his research into a South Indian community informed these aspects of the fictional world.
“In my research, I read about how one of the communities down South had these rules - no marriage and lineage passing through women and not splitting the family property or house. So that part came mainly from research,” Shetty answered when asked about how the idea came to his mind.
Akka Trailer Explained: What We Know So Far
The Akka trailer introduces Pernuru, a fictional kingdom in South India where women have held power for generations.
The crime drama follows Bhavani (Keerthy Suresh), who wants to protect her family's legacy, and Rudra (Radhika Apte), whose arrival threatens the existing order.
The trailer hints at a clash over power, loyalty and tradition. It also offers glimpses of a world shaped by crime, family ties and strict social rules. However, how the rivalry unfolds and what Rudra wants from Pernuru remain to be seen.

Keerthy described Bhavani as someone determined to defend what she has inherited, while acknowledging the difficult decisions that come with her position.
“Bhavani is a woman who knows what she stands for and will go to great lengths to protect her legacy. What makes her interesting is that beneath her strength and authority are choices that are never easy, especially when the stakes are so high,” she said in Netflix's official announcement.
Radhika, meanwhile, described Rudra as a woman who refuses to be defined by her circumstances and is prepared to challenge the established order.
“What I enjoyed about Akka is that the conflict isn't simply about who holds power; it's also about the different beliefs, loyalties, and personal stakes that drive each character,” she said.
