Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan, is embroiled in plagiarism allegations from a Hollywood concept artist. The accusations have sparked controversy around the film's originality, raising concerns among fans. Artists Oliver Beck and Sung Choi accuse the makers of plagiarism. Both artists aired their grievances on social media alleging serious misconduct by the film's creators, stirring significant controversy around the Prabhas-starrer.
Oliver claimed that initially approached for collaboration, the makers of Kalki 2898 AD and the concept artist were unable to work together due to unspecified reasons. The artist expressed surprise upon seeing the film's trailer on June 10, noting striking similarities to his prior work, sparking allegations of plagiarism. "t might be difficult to see the plagiarism when you are not an artist. You might not see it immediately but all my artist friends that I have talked to and the artist community are very clear that this was referenced from my work and you can see clearly that the main takeaways are the colour palettes, it is the same, and also the shapes."
"It is not an exact copy but the shapes are similar. It is too much of a coincidence because they also contacted me to work on this film. So, they know my portfolio and they have seen my work so it is too much of a coincidence," Oliver told Indian Express.
While acknowledging similarities between his work and the Kalki trailer, they expressed uncertainty about pursuing legal action. He cited the challenge of proving direct copying, contrasting it with Sung Choi's case where clear plagiarism was evident. "Legal recourse is challenging for me because there isn’t direct copying of my artwork. Legal action typically requires very evident plagiarism, such as in Sung Choi’s case where the work was practically copy-pasted,” he added.
