Lata Mangeshkar Second Death Anniversary: Lata Mangeshkar, known affectionately as Bharat Kokila (the Nightingale of India), was a superstar playback singer whose melodies continue to echo in our minds and hearts. Conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Bharat Ratna, innumerable National Awards, and honours from foreign nations that recognised Lata’s talent, she began singing at the age of 13, predominantly in Marathi films. Later, she switched to acting for a brief time before putting her feet in the Hindi film industry, known popularly as Bollywood, where she was destined to make an ever-lasting mark.
Mangeshkar is known for her melodious voice but she has sung songs across genres and in over 36 languages. Though her most popular renditions are in Hindi, Bengali and Marathi. Mangeshkar was born in a humble family in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on 28 September 1929 and died on February 6, 2022, due to multiple organ failure. The singing legend may have left the earthly realms but her contributions to the music and entertainment industry will never be forgotten and so here are timeless songs of Lata Mangeshkar – that continue to touch our hearts and provide us solace on our darkest days and even happier ones.

This evergreen love anthem from the 1964 film ‘Woh Kaun Thi?’ is highly popular. Released over 60 years ago, this song has been on everyone’s playlist for eternity now. Lyrics of the film’s songs penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and music by Madan Mohan, the song’s lyrics transport the listener to a world of dreams where one longs for an embrace from their loved ones. Whether a chilly winter morning or rainy afternoon, this song playing in the background is enough for a relaxing siesta.
Piya Tose Naina Laage Re:
Another classic, this love song from Vijay Anand’s 1965 film ‘Guide’ based on RK Narayan’s novel of the same name has won millions of hearts since its release decades ago. The song describes the longing for a loved one by a lover with beautiful lyrics penned by Shailendra and the diva Waheeda Rahman onscreen. The music and background score for the film was composed by Sachin Dev Burman.
Tere Bina Zindagi Se:
This contemplative-melancholic masterpiece has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar - Bollywood’s evergreen playback singer duo. The song is from Gulzar’s 1975 film ‘Aandhi’ whose music was produced by the legendary Rahul Dev Burman. Lyrics penned by Gulzar himself, Indian music enthusiasts would be aware of just how enchanting music was created when the trio of Lata Mangeshkar, Kishor Kumar, and RD Burman came together.
Naam Gum Jayega:
This one song aptly describes Lata Mangeshkar’s iconic singing career and her impact on the Indian music industry. The song lyrics have the phrase ‘Meri aawaz hi pehchan hai…’ (My voice is my identity…) which aptly gives life to her undeniable talent and the masterpieces that she lent her voice to. From Gulzar’s 1977 film ‘Kinara’, the music was composed by the legendary RD Burman.

Humko Humise Chura Lo:
This song from Aditya Chopra’s hit 2000 film ‘Mohabbatein’ featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Amitabh Bachchan is another classic of recent times. The music by Jatin-Lalit was well received and Mangeshkar sang it along with Udit Narayan.
Tere Liye:
This poignant love song can tug at everyone’s heartstrings. Sung by Mangeshkar along with Roop Kumar Rathod the song beautifully captures the agony and pain of lovers who are separated and cannot be together. From Yash Chopra’s 2004 film ‘Veer Zaara’, the song is a part of the film’s excellent soundtrack by Madan Mohan.
